How to Boost Your Metabolism: 4 Habits That Really Help
Your Metabolism Didn’t Break. Here’s What Happened.
It might be the sentence I hear most: “Joy, my metabolism just isn’t what it used to be.”
Here’s the good news: your metabolism didn’t suddenly quit on you. What’s really going on is gradual muscle loss, plus hormone and lifestyle shifts that sneak up over time. And all of it is something you can influence.
Here are the 4 habits I’d focus on first
1. Make protein the MVP of every meal.
Protein is your metabolism’s best friend. It helps preserve lean muscle, which burns more calories at rest than fat does, and it keeps you full for hours. Most people save their protein for dinner, but you should be spreading it across the day instead, and aiming for 20 to 30 grams at every meal.
Try this: eggs or Greek yogurt at breakfast, tuna or chicken salad at lunch, salmon, turkey, tofu, beans, or lentils at dinner. And don’t forget easy boosts like cottage cheese, edamame, chickpeas, nuts, seeds, and protein-rich smoothies.
2. Strength train 2 to 3 times a week.
If I could pick just one type of exercise for your metabolism, this is it. Resistance bands, bodyweight moves, a pair of dumbbells… they all build and maintain muscle. And muscle is what keeps your calorie burn humming. Think of every session as an investment in your future metabolism.
3. Don’t eat too little.
This one surprises people. Skipping breakfast and surviving on a tiny salad doesn’t “wake up” your metabolism. It often does the opposite. When you consistently under-eat, your body gets stingy with energy, and you can lose precious muscle along the way. Build balanced meals instead: protein, fiber-rich carbs, and some healthy fat.
4. Sneak in movement all day.
Your metabolism doesn’t only count the workout. Walking the dog, gardening, hauling groceries, taking the stairs, chasing the kids and grandkids… it all counts. Those little bursts between the big stuff add up more than most people realize.
