Honouring the Legacy of Quran Translators: Marmaduke Pickthall – The Majestic Quran
Every translation of the Quran represents a remarkable effort to bring Allah’s words closer to people who do not understand Arabic. At Invitation Publishing, we recognise and appreciate the dedication of those who came before us, whose scholarship and commitment helped generations of English-speaking readers discover the Quran’s beauty and guidance.
Among these pioneers stands Marmaduke Pickthall (1875–1936), a British Muslim writer, scholar and translator whose contribution to Quranic literature remains influential today.
Pickthall embraced Islam in 1917 and published The Meaning of the Glorious Koran in 1930. His translation became one of the most respected English renderings of the Quran, admired for its literary elegance and commitment to conveying the meaning of the original Arabic.
His remarkable story is explored in Jamie Gilham’s new biography, A Great English Muslim, published by Hurst in 2026. Drawing on historical archives and previously unpublished correspondence, Gilham offers a fascinating account of Pickthall’s journey to Islam, his literary achievements and his efforts to build understanding between the Muslim world and the West.
Pickthall was more than a translator. He was a passionate advocate for Islam, a respected novelist and a thinker who sought to challenge misconceptions about the faith during a period of considerable political and social change.
Building on a Legacy of Scholarship
Our approach is also to make the Quran’s message accessible, clear and relevant to contemporary readers. While translation styles and approaches have evolved, we share a common purpose with those who preceded us: helping people engage with the timeless guidance of the Quran.
We believe that honouring earlier translators does not diminish the value of newer translations. Rather, it reminds us that making the Quran accessible is a continuing journey of scholarship, dedication and service.
Marmaduke Pickthall’s legacy deserves recognition, and Jamie Gilham’s biography is a welcome contribution to preserving the story of a remarkable British Muslim.
May Allah reward all those, past and present, who have devoted their lives to sharing the message of His Book.
