The word “Quran” itself comes from the Arabic root qara’a, meaning “to read” or “to recite”, a fitting name, since the text was transmitted orally and continues to be recited, memorised, and taught aloud to this day.
The Structure of the Quran
The Quran is organised into 114 chapters, called surahs, which vary widely in length, from just a few verses to hundreds. Each surah is further divided into verses, known as ayat (singular: ayah), meaning “sign” or “miracle.” In total, the Quran contains over 6,000 verses. The surahs are not arranged chronologically, based on the order in which they were revealed.
Scholars broadly classify the surahs into two categories:
Meccan surahs: Revealed while the Prophet (peace be upon him) was in Mecca, often focused on core beliefs like the oneness of God, the afterlife, and moral conduct.
Medinan surahs: Revealed after the migration to Medina, often addressing law, community organisation, and social issues.
What Is the Quran in Islam?
In Islam, the Quran holds a status unlike any other text. It is considered:
- The direct, unaltered word of God. We believe every word of the Quran originates from God, not from the Prophet himself, who is regarded purely as the Messenger through whom the revelation was delivered.
- A miracle in itself. Islamic tradition points to the Quran’s linguistic and literary excellence as evidence of its divine origin, particularly given that the Prophet was unlettered.
- The primary source of Islamic law and guidance. Alongside the Sunnah (the sayings and practices of the Prophet), the Quran forms the foundation of Islamic theology, ethics, and jurisprudence (Shariah).
- Central to worship. Verses from the Quran are recited during the five daily prayers, and memorising the entire text, earning the title of Hafiz, is considered a deeply honoured achievement across the Muslim world.
- Preserved in its original language. We believe the Quran must be read and recited in its original Arabic to retain its full meaning and spiritual power. Translations into other languages are widely available and used for study, but are generally regarded as interpretations of the meaning rather than the Quran itself.
