16 Recipes to Help Lower Blood Pressure | Joy Bauer
Lowering your blood pressure does not mean a lifetime of bland, salt-free food. No thank you! Some of the most powerful blood pressure fighters are foods you probably already love: bananas, yogurt, avocado, salmon… and potatoes. (Yes, potatoes!)
So I rounded up 16 recipes built around those foods, plus five science-backed habits that help nudge your numbers into the happy zone. One tip for every recipe on this page: skip the added salt and let the herbs and spices do the work.
5 Habits That Help Lower Blood Pressure
- Eat the DASH way. DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) beats every other eating pattern for lowering blood pressure. In studies, it has dropped the top number (systolic) by as much as 13 points. The formula is simple: lots of fruits and veggies, whole grains, and low-fat dairy.
- Shake the salt habit. Aim for 1,500 to 2,300 mg of sodium a day. That change alone can lower blood pressure significantly for some people. Here’s the sneaky part: most of our sodium doesn’t come from the saltshaker. It hides in packaged and restaurant foods, so reading labels is your secret weapon.
- Pump up the potassium. Potassium is sodium’s natural counterbalance, helping your body flush out the excess. Aim for about 3,500 mg a day from bananas, oranges, dried apricots, potatoes, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, avocado, spinach, kale, squash, and beans. (If you have kidney disease or take blood pressure medication, check with your doctor before boosting potassium.)
- Be your own chef. When you cook at home, you control the salt. You can skip the added salt in any of my recipes and let garlic, citrus, vinegar, fresh herbs, and spices bring the flavor.
- Choose mocktails over cocktails. Even one drink a day nudges up the risk of high blood pressure, and the risk climbs with every extra drink. Looking for a festive stand-in? Try my mocktail recipes!
