Why Did Prophet Yunus Leave His Nation? Lessons Explained – Muslim and Quran

Last updated on October 2nd, 2026 at 01:53 pm

Prophet Yunus عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ is one of the Prophets, mentioned by name in the Quran. His name appears in 4 Quranic verses: Surah An-Nisa, Surah Al-An’am, Surah Yunus, and Surah Al-Anbiya; he is mentioned by a different name (Dhun-Nun). Additionally, he has been mentioned as “man in fish” in Surah Al-Qalam.  His story is narrated in 16 different verses in 4 Surahs. But he is more popularly remembered as the Prophet, who was swallowed by a great fish, often identified as a whale. He is also often referred to as “man in fish” or “fish man”.

Prophet Yunus عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ was swallowed by a fish and remained there for quite some time, but after repeated supplication, he was rescued and returned to his nation. In this context, relevant questions often arise: why he faced this trial and test, whether he committed a mistake or sin, and, most importantly, why he left his nation. The Quran answers these questions in different Surahs and verses. His story, as mentioned in the Quran and classical commentaries, explicitly reveals what happened to Prophet Yunus عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ and how he was put to such a unique and horrible trial.

Who Was Prophet Yunus عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ and What Happened With Him

Prophet Yunus عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ is one of the 25 Prophets mentioned by name in the Quran. In chronological order, as found in historical and classical commentaries, Prophet Yunus عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ was sent before Prophet Zarariyah عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ and after Prophet Al-Yasa عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ. He was sent as a Messenger of Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ to the people of Nineveh, identified as Mosul, a city in present-day Iraq.

He preached to his nation for many years, inviting them to worship only One Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ. But they paid no heed to his consistent preaching. Instead, they mocked and rejected him. The matter persisted for many years, warning them of serious consequences and Divine punishment, as the previous nations also faced. But they continued with idol worship. In fact, many of them laughed at him. They said If punishment has to come, let it happen, but we are not inclined to leave the traditions of our ancestors; the tradition of worshipping idols. They clearly informed Prophet Yunus عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ that they are not at all afraid of his warnings about Divine Punishment.

Realizing the situation, Prophet Yunus was deeply disheartened. Being a Prophet, he tried his best to bring his nation toward Allah’s سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ worship. Despite his sincere desire to help his nation, he concluded that his nation’s fate was sealed and that Allah’s سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ punishment would surely come. In fact, Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ had decided his people’s fate, which the Prophet Yunus عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ had foreseen. Overwhelmed by desperation, he decided to leave his place and his nation to face the wrath of Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ. So, he left his place without waiting for express permission and command from Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ. That was perhaps his mistake, which is also mentioned in the 87th verse of Surah Al-Anbiya.

Translation of relevant part – And We bestowed Our favour upon Dhu al-Nun. Recall, when he went forth enraged, thinking We have no power to take him to task….

This verse confirms that Prophet Yunus عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ left his place in anger, without express permission or command from Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ.

After that, two unique incidents happened. Soon after, when he left his nation alone, the sky turned red, indicating that divine punishment was about to strike the place. People began to worry and realized that the Prophet Yunus عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ was right; the punishment was coming. The entire nation repented collectively, and Allah’s سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ command averted the punishment. This is a unique incident in the history of this world in which Allah’s سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ punishment was averted by the collective repentance of an entire nation. This event is narrated in the 98th verse of Surah Yunus, as follows:

Translation – Did it ever happen that the people of a town believed on seeing God’s chastisement and its believing profited them? (There is no such instance) except for the people of Yunus. When they believed, We granted them reprieve from humiliating chastisement in this world, and We let them enjoy themselves for a while.

On the other hand, Prophet Yunus عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ boarded a ship after fleeing from his place. The ship was overloaded, and eventually, he was thrown out of it. When he was thrown into the sea, a great fish (probably a whale) swallowed him. Realizing his mistake, Prophet Yunus عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ sincerely repented and repented repeatedly while he was in the belly of the fish. His supplication, known as the “Supplication of Yunus”, is mentioned in the next part of the 87th verse of Surah Al-Anbiya.

Translation of relevant part – …..Eventually he cried out in the darkness: There is no god but You. Glory be to You! I have done wrong.”

This incident is also narrated in verses 140 to 142 of Surah As-Saffat.

Translation

  1. Call to mind when he fled to the laden ship,
  2. cast lots, and was among the losers.
  3. Then a fish swallowed him, and he was blameworthy.

His repentance was accepted, and he came out from the belly of the fish, and eventually returned to his nation, who had turned into believers. This was a unique and most horrible trial faced by a Prophet.

Why Did Prophet Yunus عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ Leave His Nation

Prophet Yunus عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ had several reasons for leaving his nation, but he made a mistake: he left without waiting for explicit permission from Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ. Some of the logical reasons behind his decision to leave his nation are summarized here:

1. Disappointment and Desperation

Calling a disbelieving nation to Allah’s سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ worship is perhaps the most difficult task every Prophet, including Prophet Yunus عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ, faced. The nation of Prophet Yunus عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ collectively rejected his preaching, despite his consistent efforts. Instead of listening, they outright rejected and even mocked him. This was painful for him, though most Prophets before and after him faced the same kind of rejection.

But Prophet Yunus عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ was very frustrated because his people did not even pay heed to his warning about the forthcoming Divine Punishment. Instead of being frightened, they laughed at him and said, “Let it happen.” That was perhaps the point when he lost all hope of turning his people toward faith. So, he realized that Allah’s سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ punishment is now inevitable. In this state of disappointment, he became desperate and decided to leave his place without waiting for an explicit command from Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ.

2. Anger at Rejection By His People

As mentioned in the 87th verse of Surah Al-Anbiya, Prophet Yunus عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ was very angry at his people’s behavior and attitude toward his preaching. He was overwhelmed by anger at the outright rejection of his preaching. He had spent so many years inviting his nation towards faith, but they consistently refused to leave idol worship. They did not even take his final warning about the forthcoming punishment by Allahسُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ seriously. He knew his nation was destined to face Divine punishment, but they were not inclined to heed any of his warnings. So, he got seriously irritated by his nation’s behavior and decided to leave them.

3. Anticipated Punishment

When his repeated efforts proved fruitless and his people did not turn toward Allah’s سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ punishment, he finally warned them of the punishment to come from Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ. But his people did not believe in any such punishment; instead, they laughed and said, ” Let it happen. On one hand, Prophet Yunus عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ was frustrated, disappointed, and angry with his nation; on the other hand, he was sure that Allah’s سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ punishment for this nation had become inevitable. So, he anticipated the forthcoming Divine Punishment for his people. That was the main reason he decided to leave his place. All the circumstantial evidence led him to believe that his nation’s destiny had been decided, and that it was only a matter of days before they would be struck by Divine Punishment. So, he left his people.

4. He Left Before Express Divine Permission

A well-known explanation in classical commentaries is that Prophet Yunus عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ left his place before receiving the express permission to depart. Leaving after receiving clear Divine permission would have been appropriate, given his Prophetic status. This might have been an act on his part, committed at an inappropriate time, but it was not a failure of his Prophetic mission. However, he left his nation without waiting for final and explicit Divine permission, and he was put to one of the toughest trials Prophets before and after him faced during their Prophetic missions.

Lessons From Prophet Yunus’s عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ Leaving His People

The story of Prophet Yunus عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ has left many lessons for future generations that remain relevant today. Some of the lessons learned from his story, especially when he left his nation, are summarized here:

  • Patience is Important – Prophet Yunus عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ repeatedly and consistently called his nation to faith, but they never turned to belief. His assignment required great patience, because many of his people rejected him, some laughed at him, and many others outright refused to stop idol worship. His story reminds believers to practice patience, even in the worst circumstances. So, the most important and extremely relevant lesson for the modern world is practicing patience, whether dealing with family affairs, teaching children, working for a good cause, or working with your team. Always be patient in your deeds.
  • Never Lose Hope – When Prophet Yunus عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُwas in the belly of a fish, he did not lose hope in Allah’s سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ He relied on sincere repentance and kept his hope alive in Allah’s سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ mercy. He repeatedly supplicated the most popular “Supplication of Yunus”, as mentioned in the 87th verse of Surah Al-Anbiya. Eventually, he came out of the fish’s belly and returned to his nation. So, the lesson is: never lose hope in Allah’s سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ mercy; keep supplicating and repenting, and wait for His blessings.
  • Admit Your Mistakes – The story of Prophet Yunus عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ teaches us an important lesson: admitting our While in the belly of the fish, he immediately realized and admitted his mistakes, as mentioned in the 87thverse of Surah Al-Anbiya. His supplication included his admission of mistake (There is no god but You. Glory be to You! I have done wrong). He repeatedly supplicated, admitted his mistake, and was eventually rescued from the belly of the fish. Remember, the first thing for true repentance is admitting your mistake.
  • Believe in Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ – Firm belief in Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ that He can rescue us from the most difficult situations is yet another lesson learned from the story of Prophet Yunus عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ. He was rescued by Allah’s سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ Will and Command, with His extreme mercy, when he was trapped in the belly of a fish. So, keep firm faith in Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ, and leave the outcome to His mercy and Will. However, never expect immediate results, though it may often happen instantly. Results may come at the appropriate time, best known to Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ.
  • Remembrance of Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰis Essential – Prophet Yunus’s عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ story, when trapped in the belly of a fish, also teaches us that continuous remembrance of Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ is an essential part of believing. The 143rd and 144th verses of Surah As-Saffat narrate, “Had he not been one of those who glorify Allah, he would certainly have remained in its belly till the Day of Resurrection.” So, his rescue from the belly of the fish was only made possible due to his consistent remembrance of Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ. The lesson is that one needs to glorify and remember Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ to get out of difficulties. Remembrance may include regular prayers, recitation of the Quran, and supplications (Duas).
  • Do Not Judge People in Haste – Prophet Yunus عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُpreached to his nation for a long time, but they did not accept the Divine Message of faith. Eventually, he was disappointed and left his nation. But when they believed in Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ, their punishment was averted. The lesson is that a person may seem far from believing at one time, but he may turn to faith at any moment. So, never judge people by their current behavior; they may change altogether in the future.
  • Repentance is Extremely Important – The nation of Prophet Yunus عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُsincerely repented when the signs of punishment began to appear. Even at that critical time, their repentance was accepted by Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ, and their punishment was averted at the eleventh hour. So, the lesson is to repent sincerely, seeking Allah’s سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ This may save us from many upcoming difficulties and punishments.
