What smart people in tech are saying about Google's AI leadership restructuring

Liu, an AI analyst based in Beijing, wrote on X that the move is Google’s way of consolidating its AI operations.

“Google is streamlining its elite troops here, cutting down on redundancies,” Liu wrote on Wednesday. “Koray was already the main force leading the team in getting things done, and now they’re reducing reporting layers while concentrating all resources on him.”

On Thursday, Liu also reacted to Semafor reporting that Hassabis has begun shifting away from his CEO duties over the last year.

Liu wrote that this was “actually a good thing.”

“He actually understands AI4Science better and not so much large models. Meanwhile, Jeff Dean is more of an underlying tech expert (Infra), and he doesn’t actually manage that many people,” he said. “The two of them were originally more suited to roles focused on external communications.”
