Mr Asif Hasan has spent more than 30 years transforming children’s heart surgery in the UK, performing thousands of open-heart operations during his career as head of Paediatric Cardiac Surgery at Newcastle’s Freeman Hospital.
His extraordinary work has earned him the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Pride of Britain Awards, recognising a career dedicated to giving children with life-threatening heart conditions a second chance at life.
Known for taking on some of the most complex cases in the country, Mr Hasan often operated on children who had been turned away by other hospitals because their chances of survival were considered too low.
For many families, he and his team at the Freeman Hospital represented their last hope.
Beyond the operating theatre, Mr Hasan devoted himself to training the next generation of heart surgeons, ensuring his knowledge and expertise would continue to save lives long after his retirement.
Reflecting on his career, he credited the colleagues, nurses and NHS teams who worked alongside him, describing their dedication as extraordinary.
He said his proudest achievement was training surgeons who would become even better than him.
His legacy lives on in the thousands of people whose lives have been changed through his work, and in the generations of surgeons who will continue that lifesaving mission.
