Solomon Smiled and Laughed

A blessed brother from our community recently shared a beautiful insight into a moment from the Quran—one that may seem small at first, but reveals a truth far greater than we can imagine. It concerns the story of Solomon and the ant.

[27:17] Mobilized in the service of Solomon were his obedient soldiers of jinns and humans, as well as the birds; all at his disposal.
[27:18] When they approached the valley of the ants, one ant said, “O you ants, go into your homes, lest you get crushed by Solomon and his soldiers, without perceiving.
[27:19] He smiled and laughed at her statement, and said, “My Lord, direct me to be appreciative of the blessings You have bestowed upon me and my parents, and to do the righteous works that please You. Admit me by Your mercy into the company of Your righteous servants.”

The King and The Ant

Picture the scene: Solomon, a mighty king with command over not just humans but jinns and birds, is marching forward with purpose. And yet, amid this grand procession, a single ant speaks—warning her colony to flee before they are crushed, not out of cruelty, but simply because Solomon and his army would not perceive them.

And Solomon hears her. He pauses. He smiles. He laughs—not out of mockery, but out of humility and reflection. Despite all his power, he had come close to trampling one of God’s creatures without the slightest awareness.

God and His Creation

Now consider this: if the gap between Solomon and the ant is vast, what of the gap between God and us? We marvel at the king’s awareness—but God’s knowledge is beyond comparison.

Our observable universe, which spans over 14 billion light years, contains over two trillion galaxies, each with hundreds of billions of stars. And this is only the smallest of the seven universes, and the Quran tells us that all this is folded within God’s right hand.

[39:67] They can never fathom the greatness of GOD. The whole earth is within His fist on the Day of Resurrection. In fact, the universes are folded within His right hand. Be He glorified; He is much too high above needing any partners.

Just as Solomon nearly crushed an ant without realizing, we live in a universe so vast that we could seem like specks in its fabric. And yet—God sees us. Each of us. Always.

Every Atom, Every Breath

[10:61] You do not get into any situation, nor do you recite any Quran, nor do you do anything, without us being witnesses thereof as you do it. Not even an atom’s weight is out of your Lord’s control, be it in the heavens or the earth. Nor is there anything smaller than an atom, or larger, that is not recorded in a profound record.

God is not only the Creator of all things—He is the Witness to all things and controls all things. He knows not only our actions, but our every heartbeat, every molecule, every unspoken thought.

Consider again the ant. God knows its tiny heartbeats, its tracheal breaths, the pheromones it releases when afraid, and the neural signals firing through its minuscule body. God not only created the ant—He sustains it, hears it, responds to it. He is intimately aware of every detail of its existence. Such is His precision and mercy that He created a universe in which even the soul of an ant is treated with full attention—as if it were the only creature in existence. Nothing is too small to escape His knowledge. Nothing is too insignificant to be held in His care.

Such delicate and precise awareness is captured in one of God’s names: al-Laṭīf—The Subtle, The Gentle, The One who perceives the finest details. As the Quran says:

[6:103] No visions can encompass Him, but He encompasses all visions. He is the Compassionatethe Cognizant.

He is beyond all perception, yet He perceives all. While nothing can encompass His essence, He encompasses every living being—down to the cries of an ant. This is not just knowledge in scope but in subtlety—an attention to the hidden, the fragile, the easily overlooked.

[19:93] Every single one in the heavens and the earth is a servant of the Most Gracious. [19:94] He has encompassed them, and has counted them one by one.
[19:95] All of them will come before Him on the Day of Resurrection as individuals.

The Difference That Matters

Solomon, despite all the wisdom, knowledge, and honor God bestowed upon him, would have crushed the ant unintentionally. He would not have known. But God never accidentally crushes. Never forgets. Never overlooks.

[2:255] GOD: there is no other god besides Him, the Living, the Eternal. Never a moment of unawareness or slumber overtakes Him. To Him belongs everything in the heavens and everything on earth. Who could intercede with Him, except in accordance with His will? He knows their past, and their future. No one attains any knowledge, except as He wills. His dominion encompasses the heavens and the earth, and ruling them never burdens Him. He is the Most High, the Great.

Nothing escapes His notice. Not your worries. Not your needs. Not your unspoken prayers. Not even the cries of an ant in a valley.

The Laugh of Realization

Perhaps that is why Solomon smiled and laughed. Perhaps in that moment, he saw the gap—not just between himself and the ant, but between himself and his Lord, realizing just how unaware even he can be. But God is never unaware.

This is the kind of awe that humbles the heart. It is the smile of a servant who glimpses just how merciful, how watchful, and how magnificent the Creator truly is.
