Sannipata Jwara: Treatment Principles and Important Formulations As Described by Acharya Sushruta

– Acharya Sushruta has described treatment of Sannipataja Jwara in Chapter 39 of Uttara Tantra – Jwara Pratisedha Adhyaya.
– The same treatment principles and formulations hold good in treating variants of Sannipataja Jwara like Abhinyasa and Ojonirodhaja Jwaras.
– Ksheerapaka prepared with Vrschiva, Bilva and Varshabhu or Shimshipa Sara are beneficial in treating Sannipataja Jwaras. Similarly, Triphala Kashaya should be given, added with ghee.
– Dipana, Virechana and Jwarahara medicines should be used either singly or in combination.
– Leha – prepared with Ghrta, Madya, Abhaya and Taila – cures tridoshaja jwaras. Similarly, Trivrt added with honey is very beneficial.
Sannipataja Jwara means fevers caused by simultaneous aggravation of all the three doshas i.e. vata, pitta and kapha.
Acharya Sushruta, in chapter 39 of Uttara Tantra section has described treatment principles of Sannipataja Jwara and also has given an account of some useful formulations to combat this condition. These treatment principles and formulations shall be used in treatment of all types of Sannipataja Jwara conditions.
Sannipataja Jwara – Treatment Principle
Sarvadoshasamutthetusansrishtanavacharayet.
All fevers should be treated according to the height of the faults.
In the treatment of fevers caused by aggravation of all the doshas together i.e. in Sannipataja Jwara, mixtures of appropriate herbs in accordance with the doshas should be administered. These fevers shall be treated in priority of aggravated doshas.
Sannipata Jwara – Important Formulations
Vrschivadi Kshirapaka – Vrschiva, Bilva and Varshabhu are boiled with milk and water and reduced to the quantity of only milk i.e. until all the water should be evaporated leaving only milk. This recipe would cure the fevers produced by all the doshas. (Su.Ut.39/202)
Shimshipa Ksheerapaka – Three parts of water is boiled with one part of milk and Shimshipa Sara – pith of Simsipa tree and its Ksheerapaka prepared. This recipe cures all kinds of fever when consumed. (Su.Ut.39/203)
Nala-Vetasadi Kashaya – Decoction of roots of Nala and Vetasa along with Murva and Devadaru, prepared in a stipulated manner is useful in curing all types of fevers when consumed. (Su.Ut.39/204)
Haridradi Kashaya – Decoction of Haridra, Bhadramusta, Triphala, Katurohini, Pichumanda, Patoli, Triphala, Devadaru and Nidigdhika cures Sannipata Jwara, when consumed. (Su.Ut.39/205-206)
Triphala Kashaya – Decoction of Triphala consumed after adding ghee to it will cure fevers caused by all three doshas. It will also cure improper digestion, excess salivation, oedema, cough and loss of taste (associated with jvara). (Su.Ut.39/206)
Anantadi Churnam – Powder of Ananta, Valaka, Musta, Nagara and Katurohini should be prepared. It should be used in 1 karsha (10 grams) dosage along with water, before sunrise. This recipe would cure all types of fevers and increase digestive fire / power. (Su.Ut.39/208)
Dipana and Virechana – Herbs which have carminative, purgative and anti-febrile properties / actions shall be used either singly or in combination, for the cure of fevers. (Su.Ut.39/209)
Although – A confection should be prepared with ghee, madya – wine, Abhaya – Haritaki and oil – sesame oil taken together. This recipe, when consumed, will cure all fevers. Similarly, even powerful fevers will get cured when Trivrt added with honey is consumed.
