New trailer for OpenAI movie 'Artificial' imagines what Sam Altman's stash of guns and gold looks like
You no longer have to use ChatGPT to imagine what OpenAI CEO Sam Altman‘s so-called doomsday bunker might look like.
On Tuesday, NEON, the independent studio that brought “Parasite” to North America, released the first look at Luca Guadagnino’s “Artificial,” a star-studded movie expected to explore OpenAI’s chaotic period when Altman was briefly ousted from the company in November 2023.
In the roughly one-minute trailer, Andrew Garfield, who plays Altman, is seen walking and bouncing along before entering a bunker with walls lined with guns and other supplies. Most of the trailer features a voice-over by Garfield about the future of AI.
“We opened Pandora’s box together,” Garfield says. “The future’s inevitable. Countries will fall. Industries are gonna collapse. And we get to be the ones to shepherd people into this new world. I’m so excited to see it.”
In a 2016 “New Yorker” profile, Altman detailed how prepping for his survival is one of his hobbies, including in the possible scenario that AI turns on humanity.
“I try not to think about it too much,” Altman said. “But I have guns, gold, potassium iodide, antibiotics, batteries, water, gas masks from the Israeli Defense Force, and a big patch of land in Big Sur I can fly to.”
Garfield’s monologue culminates in a showdown between Altman and Ilya Sutskever, played by Yura Borisov. Sutskever, an OpenAI cofounder, helped lead the effort to remove Altman.
Since then, Altman has tried to downplay both his interest in prepping and the extent to which his plans include a bunker.
“I have like structures, but I wouldn’t say a bunker,” Altman said during a 2023 Wall Street Journal live interview.
When Altman repeated that similar line to comedian Theo Von in 2025, the popular podcaster gave the OpenAI CEO a hard time for quibbling over the definition.
“I’ll let you, I’ll let you keep me on the ropes in a lot of this conversation, but I am going to call that out as a dang bunker, dude,” Von said. “Sam, that’s a bunker.”
Altman said that he had “underground, concrete heavy, reinforced basements.”
“I don’t have what I would call a bunker,” Altman said, adding that the topic had been on his mind “not because of AI but because people are dropping bombs in the world again.”
When the OpenAI CEO expressed confusion over the difference between a basement and a bunker, Von’s staff asked ChatGPT.
OpenAI’s chatbot sided with the argument that Altman does indeed have a bunker.
An uncertain future no more
Much like Altman’s five-day fiasco in 2023, it was briefly unclear what would happen with Guadagnino’s movie. In June, Amazon MGM Studios dropped the movie directed by the “Call Me by Your Name” filmmaker. Neon, which also released the “Anora,” the best picture at the 2025 Academy Awards, later stepped in.
Amazon’s move came three months after it announced a $50 billion investment in OpenAI.
The movie is set to be released in select theatres on Christmas Day. According to The Wrap, it will have a wider release in January.
“Artificial” marks Garfield’s return to the world of Big Tech. In 2010, he portrayed Facebook cofounder Eduardo Saverin in Aaron Sorkin’s “The Social Network,” which received a Best Picture nomination.
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, who is a fellow bunker owner, is famously not a fan of the movie.
