At 155 feet long, the C-32A is smaller than the VC-25A with room for 16 crew members and 45 passengers. Each C-32 costs around $145 million to produce, according to the Air Force.

It usually transports vice presidents, Cabinet members, and other VIPs, but the president uses it to fly into and out of smaller airports that aren’t built to support the massive primary 747 aircraft.

It was also reportedly used to secretly move the president in July.

The Post reported that on July 8, Trump flew from a NATO summit in Turkey aboard a C-32A after being shuttled to the aircraft in a catering truck from the legacy VC-25A 747 he had publicly boarded.

The 747, carrying journalists and some White House staff, was reportedly used as a decoy amid a threat from Iran. In an extraordinary misdirection, the VC-25A took the call sign “Air Force One” midflight despite the president not being aboard, while Trump’s C-32A flew under the generic call sign “Reach 18,” the Post reported.

After landing in the UK, the president moved from the C-32A to the VC-25A and later deplaned from the larger aircraft in view of cameras, though The Post reported that it was unclear exactly how he had made the transfer. He then boarded the former Qatari 747-8 for the flight back to the US.

At the time, Trump posted on social media that he would fly on the old Air Force One for “old time’s sake,” saying the switch would give US service members in Britain a chance to see the newer aircraft. The Post later reported that Trump did not, in fact, fly from Turkey aboard the legacy Air Force One.

The White House did not respond to a request for comment from Business Insider.
