5-Minute Frozen Margarita Recipe
This frozen margarita recipe has been my go-to frozen cocktail for years, even when I’m not celebrating Cinco de Mayo. I love it for summer happy hours and backyard gatherings because it’s quick, refreshing, and comes together with just 5 simple ingredients.
Unlike a Classic Margarita served on the rocks, a frozen margarita is blended with ice cubes until it’s thick, smooth, and perfectly slushy. The result is an ultra-refreshing cocktail that’s cold, citrusy, and easy to sip.
I love how this recipe lets the fresh lime juice and tequila shine without relying on a frozen margarita mix. It’s a simple, classic cocktail, and always a crowd favorite!

This is one of those cocktail recipes I find myself making again and again because it’s so easy and perfect for entertaining:
- Only 5 ingredients: Simple pantry and bar staples are all you need.
- Blended in 5 minutes: A high-speed blender does all the work, with very little prep.
- Easy to scale: Making a larger batch for parties or celebrations is effortless.
- Fresh, classic flavor: Fresh lime juice, tequila, and orange liqueur create the perfect balance of tart, sweet, and citrusy.
“One of the best frozen margarita recipes I’ve tried, followed exactly except had to add about 3oz fresh lemon juice bc my limes were a little stingy. Popped the rest in a glass container in the freezer for tomorrow, and it’s icy and slushy. Thanks for the great recipe!”

What You’ll Need
Here are the simple ingredients I use to make this easy frozen margarita recipe:
- Tequila: Any good-quality tequila that fits your taste works well here. My favorite is Contigo. It’s a blanco tequila (or silver tequila) with a smooth flavor. A reposado tequila would add a more complex taste. If you love mezcal, try these Spicy Mezcal Margaritas.
- Orange liqueur: I typically use triple sec, but Cointreau or Grand Marnier are great options. If I’m out of orange liqueur, a splash of fresh orange juice can work in a pinch to add that orange flavor.
- Fresh lime juice: Freshly squeezed lime juice makes a huge difference in both flavor and brightness. The fresher the better!
- Agave nectar: Agave syrup keeps the recipe true to a classic margarita and blends easily into the drink. Honey or a Homemade Simple Syrup are both great substitutes, depending on what’s in the pantry.
- Ice: Ice is what gives frozen margaritas their signature thick, slushy texture. I add a little extra if I want an even thicker consistency.

How to Make This Frozen Margarita Recipe in a Blender
This frozen margarita recipe is super simple. Here’s what I do:
- Add all ingredients to a blender. Place the tequila, orange liqueur, fresh lime juice, agave nectar, and ice into a high-speed blender.
- Blend until smooth and slushy. Blend on high until the margarita reaches a thick, frozen consistency. The ice should be fully pulverized, with a smooth, sippable texture.
- Adjust the texture as needed. For a thicker frozen margarita, add more ice and blend again. If the margarita is too thick, add a small splash of lime juice to thin it out. I avoid adding more alcohol at this point. The balance is perfect!
- Serve immediately. Pour into a salt-rimmed margarita glass and garnish with a fresh lime wheel or wedge for the perfect finishing touch.
I love using my Vitamix for blended drinks. It’s the perfect margarita blender because it’s strong enough to pulverize the ice into that slushy consistency. I use it for smoothies, soups, and nut butter, too!

A salted rim is my favorite way to finish a margarita because it balances the tart lime flavor and adds a little extra texture with every sip. The key is using the right amount of salt so it complements the drink without overpowering it. Here are some extra tips:
- Use coarse salt: I recommend coarse sea salt because the larger crystals stick well to the glass and add the perfect salty finish. Margarita salt or kosher salt also works well.
- Moisten just the outside edge: Dip the rim of the glass in water before adding salt, making sure to coat just the outer edge. This helps prevent too much salt from mixing into the drink.
- Try Tajín for a twist: For a fun variation, I love swapping traditional salt for Tajín. The chili-lime seasoning adds a little heat and extra citrus flavor.

I love this frozen margarita recipe as-is, but it’s also an easy cocktail to customize with fresh fruit, spicy flavors, or a fun twist on the classic lime version.
- Coconut: Coconut pairs beautifully with lime and tequila! Add frozen coconut chunks or a little coconut milk for a creamy, tropical frozen margarita.
- Jalapeño: For a spicy kick, blend in a few slices of fresh jalapeño. The heat pairs especially well with the citrusy flavors in a margarita.
- Mango: Frozen mango chunks add natural sweetness and a tropical flavor that pairs perfectly with tequila and lime. See my Frozen Mango Margarita for the full recipe.
- Peach: Fresh or frozen peaches add sweetness and summer flavor when blended into the margarita.
- Pineapple: Try a Pineapple Margarita for a vacation-inspired twist. Frozen pineapple adds tropical sweetness and a bright, juicy flavor.
- Raspberry: Tart raspberries add a beautiful color and a bright berry flavor that balances the sweetness of the cocktail.
- Strawberry: Strawberry Margaritas are always a summer favorite. Frozen strawberries add a bit of tartness and a gorgeous red color to this classic cocktail.
- Watermelon: Watermelon Margaritas are next-level delicious when they’re frozen. The frozen watermelon chunks make the cocktail extra refreshing.
Planning a summer party? Pair these frozen margaritas with my Margarita Pie Bars for a fun dessert inspired by the same bright lime flavors.
