What We Know About ‘Freedom Fuel’ Gas Stations

President Donald Trump first announced the “network” of gas stations last week, saying 25 would be established in the Philadelphia area with lowered gas prices.
The White House has told multiple outlets the company operating the stations is not affiliated with the Trump administration and privately owns 25 gas stations across New Jersey and Pennsylvania, attributing the stations’ lower prices to a reduction in profit margins.
A White House spokesperson did not identify the company behind Freedom Fuel Network to CBS News.
Trump said in a post last week a “VERY smart retailer, located throughout the Northeast, is stepping up,” but did not provide the name of the company in his post.
The White House said in an X post on Tuesday the first Freedom Fuel gas station was established in Philadelphia and featured gas for $3.47 per gallon, a nod to Trump being the 47th president of the U.S.
The location revealed Tuesday was not built from scratch and instead converted from a Sunoco station in Dresher, Pennsylvania, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported, noting the average cost for a gallon of gas in Philadelphia on Tuesday was $3.95.
A spokesperson confirmed a listing of 25 locations across Philadelphia and South Jersey on the Freedom Fuel Network website was accurate, but did not confirm to the Inquirer that all locations were open.
GasBuddy’s head of petroleum analysis, Patrick De Haan, told Quartz the price point boasted by the Freedom Fuel gas stations is not realistic without some form of subsidy, saying, “Generally, when losses happen, somebody’s got to pay for it.”
What We Don’t Know
It is unclear what company is behind Freedom Fuel Network. De Haan also told Quartz multiple gas stations from the network are under “vastly different” names in GasBuddy’s database.

Trump has repeatedly vowed gas prices will drop lower than they were before the U.S. and Israel launched a military operation against Iran, which largely contributed to a surge in prices that brought the national average for a gallon of gas to $4.56 in May. The surge in gas prices marked the highest cost for petroleum in the U.S. since 2022, when average prices for a gallon of gas in the U.S. reached an all-time high of more than $5 per gallon. The national average has since fallen to about $3.78, but De Haan warned Wednesday that Ukrainian attacks on Russian oil refineries and the end of the U.S.-Iran ceasefire could lead to a rise in gas prices nationally next week.
