A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is based on George R.R. Martin’s Dunk and Egg fantasy novellas. Set roughly 70 years after House of the Dragon and about a century before the events of Game of Thronesthe first season follows the adventures of hedge knight Ser Duncan the Tall and his young squire, Egg, as they travel across Westeros and encounter “great destinies, powerful foes and dangerous exploits,” per HBO.
The Season 1 finale, titled “The Morrow,” arrives in the aftermath of the brutal Trial of Seven, where Ser Duncan the Tall and his six recruits were pitted against Prince Aerion Targaryen and his men. Dunk ultimately emerged victorious, but the bloodshed resulted in the death of Prince Baelor Targaryen, who suffered a fatal head injury at the end of Episode 5.

Yes! HBO renewed A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms for a second season in November 2025, two months before the premiere of Season 1. Showrunner Ira Parker revealed to Esquire in January that filming for Season 2 has already begun.
“We’ve been shooting [season 2] every day for the last two weeks,” Parker said. “We’ll see how the audience responds and we’ll go from there, but I love these characters and I love these stories so much.”

There are three novellas in George R.R. Martin’s A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms collection: The Hedge Knight, The Sworn Swordand The Mystery Knight. Season 1 adapted The Hedge Knightand the upcoming second season will be based on The Sworn Sword.
Parker told The A.V. Club that The Sworn Sword is his favorite installment in Martin’s trilogy, noting that it features memorable characters such as Rohanne Webber (also known as the Red Widow), Ser Bennis and Ser Eustace.
“I can’t say much but we have three absolutely brilliant actors coming in to do these roles. I’m excited. We are cutting some scenes together now, and the directors are seeing some of it, so it feels nice to see [season 2] slowly come together,” he said.
Parker added that Season 1’s release coinciding with the filming of Season 2 has been a “blessing” in several ways. “It allows you to do what Dunk does by putting one foot in front of the other to focus on the work instead of just focusing on the response.”
What About The Spinoff’s Future Beyond Season 2?
Parker also discussed his long-term plans for the Game of Thrones spinoff in his interview with Esquiredescribing a vision that could unfold over multiple seasons and even decades.
“The truth is—and I’ve pitched this to HBO with a couple very polite eye rolls—I want to do four or five now with Egg as a kid. Then, I want to come back in ten years and do four or five more seasons with Egg the Prince,” he explained, adding that he also wants to explore the “real Dexter [Ansell] and real Peter, just the age that they are at that point. Then, we’ll come back ten years after that and do well, Egg the adult.”

While A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Season 2 is officially in development, HBO has not yet announced a specific premiere date. However, the network has indicated that the next installment is expected to debut sometime in 2027.
HBO CEO Casey Bloys previously told Deadline that new seasons of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms are expected to roll out annually, suggesting a 2027 release for Season 2 and a potential 2028 premiere for Season 3.
“This will be annual,” Bloys said. “Again, it was something that we were trying to — it’s not possible for all shows — but it is something that, where it’s possible creatively, to get back to that and we’d like to try and do that.”
Compared to its franchise counterparts, House of the Dragon and Game of Thronesthe Dunk and Egg spinoff operates with a smaller budget and a shorter episode count, factors that could contribute to its quicker turnaround.
HBO EVP Francesca Orsi confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter in 2025 that episodes cost “under $10 million” to produce, significantly less than the per-episode budgets for Game of Thrones or House of the Dragon. Season 3 of House of the Dragon is slated to premiere in June 2026, nearly two years after Season 2.
The Season 1 finale of A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms premieres on Sunday, Feb. 22 at 10 p.m. ET/PT on HBO and HBO Max. Watch the preview below.
