Ryan Garcia did what he was expected to do and reached a new milestone on Saturday night in Las Vegas. Garcia scored a dominant unanimous-decision victory over Mario Barrios to become the new WBC welterweight champion.
This one wasn’t close. The victory didn’t just push Garcia to his first world title, he also improved to 25-2. Barrios’ loss dropped his record to 29-3-2. The judges scored the fight as followed, 119-108, 120-107 and 118-109.
In the very first round, Garcia came out with a point to prove. Two thunderous right hands, yes right hands, sent Barrios to the canvas. Despite gaining a reputation as a one-handed fighter, usually leaning heavily on his left, Garcia wanted to be sure Barrios respected attacks from both sides.
Garcia would tune Barrios up with savage two and three-punch combinations for the next 11 rounds. Barrios managed to stay on his feet the rest of the way, but he was outclassed in every way.
Garcia was going for the finish, but he couldn’t find the kind of shots he needed to get Barrios out of the fight. Still, the performance was the best of Garcia’s career from a pure boxing standpoint.
What’s next for Garcia?
He told me his first choice was a meeting with Shakur Stevenson. Just ahead of the final round on Saturday, DAZN’s Chris Mannix spoke to Stevenson about the potential of a fight with Garcia.
Stevenson, a pound-for-pound contender says he would be interested in a clash with Garcia. I also asked Garcia if he woukd entertain a fight witb Conor Benn, who recently signed with Zuffa Boxing.
According to Garcia, Benn would be his “second choice.”
After Saturday’s win, Garcia’s name will be a major draw throughout the weight region and he even called Stevenson out in the ring. I would be surprised if that isn’t the next fight for both men.
