Spring training is off and running for the San Francisco Giants.
The Giants have been conducting spring training in Scottsdale, Arizona since 1984.
The Giants aren’t the only team to have trained in Scottsdale.
The Boston Red Sox called Scottsdale their spring home from 1959-1965.
The Chicago Cubs trained in Scottsdale from 1967-1978.
The Oakland Athletics held spring training in Scottsdale from 1979-1981.
The Giants and Scottsdale have enjoyed a mutually beneficial relationship.
“Old Town” Scottsdale has seen spring training grow from lazy spring days hanging out in sunshine drenched Scottsdale Stadium, to now, when downtown of Scottsdale has become the spring turf of Giants fans.
Giants fans, dressed in their orange and black hats, and jerseys can be seen walking the streets of “Old Town” Scottsdale from dawn, through sunset, and then again at dawn the following day.
Restaurants and watering holes along Scottsdale Avenue, and on the side streets, provide a fan-friendly environment for Giants fans. And even for their spring training opponents.

New Faces on the Giants:
While the Giants didn’t land any of the “major” offseason free agents, they did manage to add some significant players to their roster this winter.
As fangraphs.com indicates, these players are new to the Giants:
Luis Arraez-INF
Harrison Bader-OF
Daniel Susac-C
Tyler Mahle-RHSP
Adrian Houser-RHSP
Sam Hentges-LHRP
What This Scout Will Be Watching:
There are several Giants players capable of providing enough offense to supplement a solid pitching staff. However, it remains to be seen how the new players blend with the returning Giants starting lineup:
- Can Luis Arraez win a batting title with the Giants? Arraez will play second base, and will lead off, hoping to set the table for improved run production.
A very solid contact hitter, Arraez uses the entire field and smokes singles and doubles, hoping to get in scoring position. But he needs more consistency than he showed last year with San Diego.
- Can left-handed hitting Rafael Devers show consistent contact in the spring, cut down on swings-and-misses, and drive in runs? Hitting out of the two-hole, Arraez should be on base plenty when Devers comes to the plate.
There were times last year, especially when he first arrived in San Francisco from Boston, when Devers looked lost at the plate.
- How much will the additions of Mahle and Houser help the Giants rotation?
Can they support the good work of Logan Webb and Robbie Ray?
The Giants will continue to rely on solid pitching for success.
Beautiful Scottsdale Stadium is where the San Francisco Giants season preparation will take place.
