The PGA Tour heads to TPC Scottsdale this week for an atmosphere unlike any other. “The People’s Open” serves as the unofficial start of the golf season for many fans, delivering an energy and electricity that simply doesn’t exist anywhere else on the schedule. The world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler arrives as the clear favorite, fresh off a win in his last start and returning to a venue where he has repeatedly thrived, backed by multiple victories and a stack of top-10 finishes. Come Sunday, it would be no surprise to see him right back in the mix with a chance to claim his third Waste Management Phoenix Open — but in a tournament this loud, this chaotic, and this loaded, who’s ready to rise up and challenge him?
Brooks Koepka

Scottie isn’t the only ball striker who has thrived at TPC Scottsdale. Brooks Koepka returns to a course where he’s won multiple times and has openly said he thrives on the chaos of this week. This suggestion may seem like a bit of a force, but last week showed it’s more than just the hype of his welcome back to the PGA Tour. Outside of a cold putter, where he ranked dead last in strokes gained putting among those who made the cut, Brooks gained over a full stroke on the field in approach shots and around the green. The ball striking is there — now the question is, can he find some magic with the putter by Thursday?
Sahith Theegala

After a disappointing and unhealthy 2025 season, Sahith enters 2026 with renewed motivation to get back to the top of his game. Coming off back-to-back top-10 finishes at the AMEX and the Farmers, he arrives at TPC Scottsdale playing some of the best golf on Tour early in the season. Predicting his performance at this event has always been tricky as he has a history of playing well every other year. He posted top-five finishes in 2022 and 2024, but struggled more in 2023 and 2025, finishing T-39 and T-57. Still, with the confidence he carries into this week and his pattern of top-five finishes in even years, it’s easy to see him contending once again.
Jordan Spieth

When it comes to tricky players to predict, Jordan Spieth is the poster child for inconsistency, but over his last 75 rounds, that narrative is starting to change. He hasn’t lost strokes in any area during this time which means the tide is perhaps starting to turn. After slipping all the way to 83rd in the Official World Golf Rankingsfew would peg him as a contender on paper. Yet TPC Scottsdale has long been a comfortable blanket for Spieth. Since 2016, he’s gained the fourth-most strokes at this venue, with four T-6 finishes in his past five starts. On a driver dominant course, his tee game has become a weapon. Over his past 50 rounds, he’s gained an average of 0.44 strokes off the tee, the 11th-best mark among the field. Occasionally he will show us peak Speith flashes, can he give us one this week?
Keith Mitchell

As a bit of a long shot, Cashmere Keith will bring more than his style to Arizona. He enters this week ranking third in the field in strokes-gained off the tee. He’s also coming off a T11 finish at the Farmers Insurance Open, where he led the field in strokes-gained tee to green amongst all golfers who made the cut. Much like Koepka, his putting is the area that holds him back. With a decent week on the greens, he could be strutting down the fairway on the back 9 on Sunday with a chance.

Coming into the week as one of the hottest golfers on the planet, Si Woo arrives with seven straight top-20 finishes, including three top-10s in his last four starts. He’ll look to keep that momentum rolling at TPC Scottsdale, a venue where he hasn’t missed a cut in his past five appearances. Fatigue is a legitimate concern after being in contention for consecutive weeks, and his ever-changing putting style will need to feel comfortable on these greens. If he can manage the workload and get a cooperative flat stick, there’s every reason to like his chances.
*The tournament starts February 5th at 9:15 a.m. Eastern Time.
