Last updated on September 29th, 2026 at 11:32 am

Prophet Ibrahim عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ holds a uniquely honored status in the three major religions, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Often, these three religions are collectively called Abrahamic religions. He is also known as the “father of the Prophets” because the Prophets of these three major religions are direct descendants of him. Prophets Ishaq, Ismael, Yaqub, Yusuf, Musa, Haroon, Dawood, Suleyman, Yunus, Ayyub, Zakariyah, Yahya, and Isa عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّلَامُ are all direct descendants of Prophet Ibrahim عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ. So, he is equally respected and honored across the three major religions.

But in Islamic teachings, Prophet Ibrahim عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ holds a unique honor. Although in Islamic teachings, all Prophets are remembered honorably with great respect, Prophet Ibrahim عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ holds a special status among them all. He is among those Prophets and Messengers of Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ who are directly mentioned in the Quran by name. In fact, he is the second most frequently mentioned Prophet in the Quran, after the Prophet Musa عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ. The name of Prophet Ibrahim عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ appears 69 times, in different contexts, in 25 Surahs of the Quran, whereas one Surah is named after him: Surah Ibrahim. One of the most important reasons for his special status in Islam is that he is the founder of the Ka’ba.

Prophet Ibrahim عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ is often remembered with the name “Khalilullah” (خليل الله), which translates to “the closest friend of Allah”, “the beloved friend of Allah”, or “the intimate friend of Allah”.

Meanings of Khalilullah

The phrase Khalilullah comprises two words, Khalil and Allah. In Arabic, the word Khalil refers to someone who is close to someone else. It also means an intimate or deeply beloved friend of someone. The second word, Allah, is more than obvious and needs no explanation; it refers to the Only One, Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ. Combined, the phrase “Khalilullah” means “the intimate friend of Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ”, or “the closest friend of Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ”.

More elaborately and respectfully, it is also translated as “the most beloved friend of Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ because here the Arabic word “Khalil” is deeply meaningful, beyond being just an ordinary relationship of being a friend. It points to a relationship with thoughtful love, intimacy, or closeness. In Islamic teachings, the title “Khalilullah” reflects an exceptional and higher level of love by Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ for His servant, the Prophet Ibrahim عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ.

Why Was Prophet Ibrahim عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ Called Khalilullah?

Why Prophet Ibrahim عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ is called Khalilullah is one of the frequently asked questions. The straightforward and precise answer is that this title was given to him directly by Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ. The 125th verse of Surah An-Nisa narrates:

Translation – And whose way of life could be better than that of he who submits his whole being to Allah, does good, and follows exclusively the way of Abraham whom Allah took for a friend?

The last part of this verse, “وَاتَّخَذَ اللہُ اِبْرٰہِيْمَ خَلِيْلًا”, directly calls Prophet Ibrahim عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ as “the beloved friend of Allah”. The reason behind remembering him as the friend of Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ in the Quran is that he, being an obedient servant of Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ, had successfully fulfilled all His Commands, and that he remained firm in faith, even during the greatest tests any human had ever faced.

Prophet Ibrahim عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ won this special and unique title due to his unique characteristics, such as:

  • He proved himself as one of the most obedient servants of Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ.
  • He always showed complete submission to Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ.
  • He lived a life full of complete devotion to tasks entrusted to him by Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ, and fulfilled every task successfully, without any hesitation.
  • His life was marked by a visible demonstration of the Oneness of Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ(Tawheed).
  • The highlights of his life were sincerity, sacrifice, and complete submission.
  • He remained steadfast during the toughest tests, hardships, personal sacrifices, dangers, and separation from his family.
  • His faith was not merely verbal but was proved by actions.
  • His qualities are repeatedly mentioned in the Quran.

What Does the Quran Say About Prophet Ibrahim عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ?

The Quran narrates different qualities of Prophet Ibrahim عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ, which formed the foundation of his being declared “Khalilullah”. Some of these references from the Quran are summarized here:

  1. In the 124thverse of Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ declares that Prophet Ibrahim عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ had fulfilled all the commands and tests assigned to him, so He promised to make him the leader of mankind.

Translation of relevant part – Recall to mind that when his Lord put Abraham to the test in certain things, and he fulfilled all of them, He said, “I am going to make you the leader of mankind.”….

  1. The absolute commitment of Prophet Ibrahim عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُtowards Tawheed (Monotheism) is also acknowledged in the Quran. The 120th verse of Surah An-Nahl narrates:

Translation – Indeed Abraham was a whole community by himself, obedient to Allah, exclusively devoted to Him. And he was never one of those who associated others with Allah in His Divinity.

Here, while acknowledging his commitment to monotheism, he is given the title “hanif”, which means “a person who rejected falsehood and devoted himself completely to the only One, Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ”. He lived in a civilization that was entirely distracted from the right path and indulged in the worst kind of polytheism. Even his father was a well-known Idol crafter. He used to argue with his father about Idols and Idolatry. Despite all that, he never worshipped idols and always turned towards the One Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ.

  1. He bravely stood tall against the entire society, which also included his father, challenging idol worship. The 52ndverse of Surah Al-Anbiya narrates how he argued with his father and the community about why they should worship idols made by themselves, which are not even capable of hearing or giving any benefits to them.

Translation – Recall when he said to his father and his people: “What are these images to which you are devoutly clinging?”

  1. The consequences of his courageous stance against polytheism, practiced by his father and his community, soon started appearing. His people warned him that if he did not stop rejecting idol worship, they would throw him into a ditch of fire and burn him to death. But he remained steadfast, even in this deadliest test. The incident is narrated in the 68th and 69th verses of Surah Al-Anbiya.

Translation

  1.  They said: “Burn him, and come to the support of your gods, if you are going to do anything.”
  2.  We said: “O fire, become coolness and safety for Abraham.”

Eventually, the fire was cooled and could not burn Prophet Ibrahim عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ. This was the most terrifying test of his life, but not the last; the toughest of all came next.

  1. Another test came in his way when Prophet Ibrahim عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُwas commanded by Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ, through a consistent dream, to sacrifice his son Hazrat Ismael, his most beloved son. He straightaway prepared to sacrifice his son; and more importantly, young Ismael also showed his willingness without any reluctance. This historical act of sacrifice is mentioned in verses 103 to 106 of Surah As-Saffat.

Translation

  1.  When both surrendered (to Allah’s command), and Abraham flung the son down on his forehead,
  2.   We cried out: “O Abraham,
  3.   you have indeed fulfilled your dream. Thus do We reward the good-doers.”
  4.   This was indeed a plain trial.

Declaring it a plain trial, Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ sent down a large ram (or a sheep) to be sacrificed by Prophet Ibrahim عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ, instead of his beloved son Ismael, as a reward. This act of sacrifice became a compulsory ritual in Islam, when Muslims sacrifice animals in remembrance.

  1. Prophet Ibrahim عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُis described in the Quran as a servant of Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ, who always fulfilled the tasks assigned by Him and lived up to the trust. The 37th verse of Surah An-Najm narrates it as follows:

Translation: and of Abraham, who lived up to the trust?
